Staff Highlight: Karen Beardsley

Karen Beardsley, our previous Humphrey director who will rejoin us next year, is currently working in Bhutan where she was awarded a two-semester Fulbright Core Scholarship to develop geographic information system (GIS) curriculum, teach GIS, and train local faculty to teach GIS at the Royal Thimphu College in Bhutan. Royal Thimphu College (RTC) was established in 2009 as the first private college in KarenBhutan. RTC offers bachelor's degrees for students who might not qualify for the relatively few government-sponsored positions at Bhutan's universities. RTC educators, including Karen, incorporate GIS training as part of the new bachelor of science degree in environmental management program - Karen’s efforts helped make this a reality. As well as helping develop and teach GIS curriculum, she and her family hosted one of our Humphrey host families, Carla and Earl Bossard, who hosted 2014-15 Fellow Nivo Ranaivoarivelo (Madagascar) and are currently hosting 2015-16 Humphrey Fellow Muhammad Ahmad (Pakistan). The Humphrey family is definitely global!
